Description Lenalidomide


Lenalidomide an anti-cancer medication used to treat Myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma, mantle cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma. It works by increasing the immune system which indirectly attacks the cancer cells. It also decreases the production of chemical messengers which is responsible for the cancer cells to grow.

Multiple myeloma

It is also called Kahler’s disease. It is a type of cancer that occurs in a plasma cell. In this condition, cancer gets accumulated in the bone marrow and affects healthy blood cells. Symptoms include constipation, loss of appetite, fatigue, bone pain, weight loss, frequent infections, excessive thirst, and numbness in your legs.

Myelodysplastic syndrome

It is also called preleukemia. It occurs when our blood cells do not form or work properly. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, pallor, anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding, and leucopenia

Mantle cell lymphoma

It is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. It usually affects a part of your immune system called the lymphatic system. It occurs when there is a change in the DNA of white blood cells called B lymphocytes. Symptoms include night sweats, belly pain, enlarged tonsils, fatigue, pain in the lower back, fever, weight loss, and loss of appetite.  

Follicular lymphoma

It is a type of cancer that affects the lymphocytes, a blood cell that helps to fight against body infection. Symptoms include inflamed lymph nodes, groin, stomach, shortness of breath, fatigue, night sweats, and weight loss.

Drug-Drug Interaction


Anakinra

It is contraindicated to use this medicine because the use of anakinra increases the effect of Lenalidomide and the combination of this medicine increase the risk of developing an infection

Deferiprone

Use alternative drug because the combination of this medicine either increases the toxicity of the other by pharmacodynamic synergism

Cholera vaccine

Therapy should be administered with caution because the use of Lenalidomide decreases the effect of the cholera vaccine by immunosuppressive effects and it also increases the risk of developing an infection

Lemborexant

Therapy should be administered with caution because the use of lemborexant will increase the effect of the thalidomide by sedation

Drug-Disease Interaction


Renal impairment

Dosage adjustment is required in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment and patients who are on dialysis because this medicine is excreted by the kidney.

Thromboembolic events

The use of this medicine may cause thromboembolic events such as deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and arterial thrombosis are increased.

Over Dose:


Take the medicine as directed by the doctor don’t overdose on the medicine. If you have taken an overdose on this medicine immediately meet the doctor and rush to the nearby hospital.

Prescribed for Follow Indication


The Lenalidomide is prescribed in the following indications as

  • multiple myeloma – treated with dexamethasone after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as maintenance therapy
  • myelodysplastic syndrome – transfusion dependant type associated with 5q deletion
  • mantle cell lymphoma – relapsed or progressive type already treated with bortezomib
  • follicular lymphoma – treated with rituximab
  • marginal cell lymphoma – treated with rituximab

Lenalidomide should not be used in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

How to Take Medicine
