WHAT IS AGASTYA

It is an important medicinal plant that is used in the treatment of various ailments. The botanical name for Agastya is Sesbania grandiflora which belongs to the Fabaceae family. The juice obtained from the plant was used to purify the diamond within three days. The flower is used for cooking purposes in India and Thailand. It is widely used in the treatment of night-blindness, headache, fever, and rhinitis.

ORIGIN AND SOURCE OF AGASTYA

It is originated from Malaysia and North America and is usually found in the humid tropical region. It is also cultivated in India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka.

It is a fast-growing tree that grows at the height of 3-5mt and the leaves are regular, deciduous which is about 15-30 cm long and it has 10-20 leaflets. The flowers are long, with 2-4 flowers racemes. Usually, the flowers appear in September and October. The fruits are 30 cm long and it contains 15-30 seeds inside the fruit.

DOSAGE OF AGASTYA

The dose of the drug used according to the physician

Leaf juice: 10-20ml

Decoction: 50-100ml

Flower: 5-10g


PRECAUTIONS WHILE USING AGASTYA

At high dose, the use of this herb may cause diarrhea

The use of this drug may cause an imbalance in the Vata and the formation of gas

The leaves are used as a contraceptive

It is considered unsafe to use this herb while you are pregnant and breastfeeding


BENEFITS OF AGASTYA

Indigestion:

According to Ayurveda, indigestion is called Agnimandya that occurs due to the imbalance of Pitta dosha and poor digestive fire which leads to the accumulation of toxins in the body and causes indigestion. The use of Agastya balances the Pitta dosha and improves digestion.

Diarrhea:

Traditional view: According to Ayurveda, Diarrhea is called Atisar. Usually, diarrhea occurs due to mental stress, improper food, water, environmental toxins. Diarrhea occurs due to the imbalance of Vata. This brings the fluid into the intestines and mixes it with stool which leads to diarrhea. The use of Agastya reduce diarrhea by balancing the Vata and it also improves digestion by its astringent property

Modern view: Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, the use of Agastya helps to decrease the breakdown of carbohydrates and prevent pancreatic cell damage this increases the secretion of insulin and decreases the blood glucose level.

Cholesterol

Traditional use: According to Ayurveda, high cholesterol occurs due to an imbalance of Pachak Agni (digestive fire). This impaired digestion occurs due to the accumulation of toxins in the body which leads to the accumulation of cholesterol and causes obstruction in blood vessels. The use of Agastya helps to improve the improper digestion by its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) produces which remove the accumulation of bad cholesterol and main normal cholesterol level

Modern view: Due to anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory property it helps to lower the blood and bad cholesterol and triglycerides. The use of Agastya also helps to increase the good cholesterol in your body
