    Medical Description of Abstet 250mg Tablet

    Abstet 250mg Tablet contains its active substance called Abiraterone acetate. It is a CYP17 inhibitor. It is not recommended in paediatric and women. It is used in the treatment of metastasised prostate cancer. It is an anti-testosterone medication used with prednisolone. It is used in cases that have not responded to chemotherapy.


    Abstet 250mg Tablet Uses

    Abstet 250mg is a CYP17 inhibitor also called an adrenal inhibitor used in the treatment of prostate cancer that has metastasised in adults. It acts as an anti-testosterone medication. It is used in the treatment of prostate cancer who have been failed to be treated with chemotherapy. It is not used in children and women.


    Abstet 250mg Tablet Benefits

    It is an adrenal inhibitor used in the treatment of castration-resistant, pre-treated with chemotherapy and failed type of prostate cancer. It is used only in adult males. It is not recommended for women and children.

    Abstet 250mg Tablet Indication

    It is an antineoplastic medication and inhibits the multiplication or proliferation of abnormal cells present in the prostate. It is used only in adult males. Abstet is recommended when prostate cancer is

    • Castration-resistant
    • Chemotherapy with docextal has failed
    • Metastasis to other organs

    It is used with prednisolone.


    Mechanism of action of Abstet 250mg Tablet

    Abstet 250mg contains abiraterone acetate is an antineoplastic and a CYP17 inhibitor. Abiraterone acetate is converted into abiraterone which is an androgen inhibitor. It inhibits the enzyme called as 17-alpha-hydroxylase also called CYP17 present in the testis, adrenal glands and prostate. In general, CYP 17, assists in the conversion process that results in the formation of progesterone and androstenedione. Abiraterone acetate can be used in treating androgen dependant prostate cancer. It reduces serum testosterone and progesterone levels. The visible decline in PSA levels is seen with the use of Abiraterone acetate in the treatment of chemo-resistant metastatic prostate cancer. In other words, It treats prostate cancer by inhibiting testosterone formation and decreases serum testosterone levels.

    Abstet 250mg Tablet Side Effects

    Very Common side effects that occur in more than 1:10 patients: co-infections, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, eczema, fatigue, hypertension, bleeding disorders, diarrhoea, constipation, rash, thinning of hair, body ache, headache, hypophosphatemia, increase in serum amylase and lipase enzymes

    Common side effects that occur 1:10 patients: Hematuria, Pyrexia, Rash, Headache, Urinary frequency, Arrhythmia, Groin pain, Nocturia, Fractures, Chest pain or chest discomfort, Cardiac failure, Lymphopenia, Hypophosphatemia, Hyperglycemia, Increased ALT/AST, Hypokalemia, Joint swelling, Muscle discomfort, Dyspnea, Fatigue, Urinary tract infection, Hematuria,

    How to Take Abstet 250mg Tablet

    • It Should be taken orally.
    • It must be taken at the same time once a day as prescribed by your physician.
    • It should be taken without food either 1 hr before food or 2 hrs after food intake
    •  It must be swallowed as a whole.
    • Don’t chew or crush the tablet.
    • It must be taken with prednisolone.
    • After therapy has been initiated, do not take more or less than the prescribed dose or stop taking it without your physicians’ approval. Skipping or changing the Abstet dose without approval may cause adverse effects making the condition more difficult to treat, or worsen side effects.


    Use of Abstet 250mg Tablet in Adult

    If you are pregnant or breastfeeding inform your physician as they are not advisable.

    • Allergic reactions - It can be mild hypersensitivity and angioedema to severe like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

    General instructions

    Drug Interaction of Abstet 250mg Tablet

    Drug-Drug Interaction

    Serum concentration is decreased by Dexamethasone and other steroids

    Serum concentration is increased by Carbamazepine, St. John's Wort, Omeprazole

    Drug-Food Interaction

    It should be taken either 1 hr before or 2 hrs after food, if doubts arise kindly refer to your physician.  Abiraterone acetate generally causes side effects thus it is advised not to be taken with alcohol, spicy foods, caffeinated beverages.

    Drug-Disease Interaction

    • Electrolyte disorders – used with caution in hypokalemia causing diseases. Consult a physician before use
    • Liver disorders – used with caution in severe liver diseases. Consult a physician before use
    • Kidney disorders – used with caution in severe kidney diseases. Consult a physician before use
    • Cardiac disorders – used with caution in heart failure and MI. Consult a physician before use

    Over Dose

    Overdosage of abiraterone acetate has less literature kindly consult your doctor.


    Missed Dose

    You can take the missed dosage if you notice within 12 hours. If it is more than 12 hours, then skip the dosage and take the next doses as usual. Don’t take a double dose for a forgotten dose.
