    Imatinib 400mg Tablet contains Imatinib 400mg it’s an antineoplastic and tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Imatinib 400mg Tablet is used in the treatment of cancers and tumors. It inhibits proliferation and causes apoptosis of abnormal cells. This medication is recommended for ages above 2 years of age.

    Mechanism of action of Imatinib 400mg Tablet

    Imatinib is an antineoplastic and tyrosine kinase inhibitor that induces apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation of abnormal cells. Imatinib inhibits bcr-abr tyrosine kinase expressed on positive cell lines of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML )and acute lymphoblastic lukemia (ALL) thereby inhibiting proliferation and induce apoptosis of abnormal cells. Imatinib also inhibits tyrosine kinase receptors present on platelets derived growth factor (PDGF) and stem cell growth factor called as c-kit of myeloproliferative diseases (MD), chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFP).


    How Imatinib 400mg Tablet works

    Imatinib inhibits the bcr-abr tyrosine kinase expressed on CML and ALL. Thus, the tablet is used in these types of leukemia in children and adults. It also inhibits tyrosine kinase receptors present on PDGF and SCGF called c-kit expressed on MD, CEL, ASM, GIST and DFP. Thus, it is used in these types of disorders and leukemias in adults only.

    How to Take Imatinib 400mg Tablet

    This tablet is taken orally.

    This tablet must be taken at the same time once a day as prescribed by your physician.

    This tablet can be taken with food.

    This tablet must be swallowed as a whole.

    Don’t chew or crush this tablet.

    If you can’t swallow, take 200ml of water in a glass and place the tablet into the water and wait for 20mins until the tablet dissolves completely, once dissolved drink the fluid. Make sure that you have taken the required dosage without spillage or wastage.

    After therapy has been initiated, do not take more or less of this drug than prescribed or stop taking it without your physicians’ approval. Missing or changing dosage without approval may cause adverse effects making the condition more difficult to treat, or worsen side effects.


    Use of Imatinib 400mg Tablet in Adult

    If you are pregnant or breastfeeding inform your physician as they are not advisable.


    Use of Imatinib 400mg Tablet in children

    This tablet is not recommended in children less than 2 years of age.


    Use of Imatinib 400mg Tablet in Elderly Patients

    This tablet has only been used in few patients 65 years or older. Dosage and usage are similar to adults. Discuss with your physician before usage.

    Drug-Food Interaction

    This tablet should not be taken with grape juice. It can be safely taken with any type of food, if doubts arise kindly refer to your physician. It generally causes neurological side effects thus it is advised not to be taken with alcohol. It is preferred to drive or operate heavy machinery with caution.


    Over Dose

    In pediatric overdosage occurs when tablet dosage is more than 400mg/d

    In adults, overdosage occurs when tablet dosage is more than 1,200mg/d

    Adverse effects are mild to moderate thus monitoring is required. Contact your physician.


    Missed Dose

    You can take the missed dosage if you notice within 12 hours. If it is more than 12 hours, then skip the dosage and take the next doses as usual. Don’t take a double dose for a forgotten dose.
