Jakavi 5mg Tablet

Jakavi 5mg Tablet contains Ruxolitinib 5mg used to treat myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera. It works by inhibiting the signaling process required for the multiplication of abnormal cancer cells. This medication is not recommended for children less than 12 years of age.

It is used in the treatment of the following conditions chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis, and polycythemia vera.

Chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis

It is a type of bone marrow cancer that interferes with your body’s normal production of blood cells. This usually occurs when stem cells in your bone marrow develop some changes in the DNA. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, pain, easy bruising, bleeding, fever, bone pain, and night sweats

Polycythemia vera

It is a type of blood cancer this occurs when your bone marrow increases the production of red blood cells this makes your blood thicken and leads to blood clots. It usually occurs when a mutation gene causes an issue in the production of a blood cell. Symptoms include itchiness, numbness, bloating, unusual bleeding, and shortness of breath

The Jakavi 5mg Tablet is prescribed in the following indications as

• Myelofibrosis types like primary myelofibrosis, post polycythemia vera myelofibrosis, post essential thrombocytopenia myelofibrosis
• Polycythemia vera who are an intolerant or inadequate response to hydroxyurea

Jakavi 5mg Tablet contains Ruxolitinib 5mg is an anti-cancer medication, a kinase inhibitor. It produces its action by inhibiting the Janus Associated Kinases that mediates the signaling process by STAT proteins and also inhibits kinase present in receptors thus signaling processes required for angiogenesis and proliferation of abnormal cells are inhibited. This shrinks the abnormal cells and minimizes metastasis thus treating and controlling cancers.

It produces its action by inhibiting the Janus Associated Kinases thus the signaling process for angiogenesis and proliferation of abnormal cells are inhibited. Thus it minimizes the growth of abnormal cancer cells and terminates metastasis of tumors or cancers.

• I am experiencing nausea and fatigue. Is this due to the Jakavi 5mg Tablet?

Yes, the common side effect of this medicine is nausea and fatigue so it is better to eat more frequent meals to decrease nausea and also avoid foods that are salty, spicy, fatty. Drink plenty of rest and do light exercise to keep yourself active

• Can I stop using the Jakavi 5mg Tablet immediately or do I have to slowly wean off the use?

You should not withdraw the medicine immediately, you should taper the dose to avoid rebound effects

• When should I call my doctor right away?

If you have experienced muscle cramping, muscle weakness, confusion, vision loss, blindness, seizures, headaches, shortness of breath, swelling of your feet, high blood pressure, tiredness, fainting, tightness in the chest.

Alcohol

Driving or operating machinery

Jakavi 5mg Tablet can be taken orally with or without food but it is better to take this medicine at a fixed time. You should not chew, cut or crush the tablet. Take the medicine as per the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Do not withdraw the medicine when you feel better kindly complete the course of treatment to avoid reoccurrence.

• Thrombocytopenia, anemia, and neutropenia was reported
• The use of this medicine increases the risk of developing infections including tuberculosis, herpes zoster, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and hepatitis
• The use of this medicine is associated with hyperlipidemia

• You are not responding to the treatment
• You have experienced any allergic reaction like rashes and itching
• You have a receiving any concomitant medication and disease

Drug-Drug Interaction

Clarithromycin

Use alternative drug because the use of clarithromycin increases the effect of ruxolitinib by affecting its hepatic and intestinal enzyme

Deferiprone

Use alternative drug because the combination of this medicine either increases the toxicity of the other by pharmacodynamic synergism

Trastuzumab

Use alternative drugs because the combination of this medicine either increases the toxicity of the other by immunosuppressive effects.

Drug-Food Interaction

Kindly avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while you are receiving this medicine because grapefruit juice increases the blood level of ruxolitinib which increases the risk for developing irregular heart rhythm. If you have experienced dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or heart palpitation immediately consult with your doctor.

Drug-Disease Interaction

Infections

Therapy should be administered with caution because the fatal and non-fatal infection may cause progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia have been reported.

Lung toxicity

Therapy should be administered with caution in patients who are with a history of interstitial pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis because the use of these multikinase inhibitors may cause pulmonary toxicity.

Cytopenias

Therapy should be administered with caution because the use of this medicine may increase the risk of developing neutropenia and thrombocytopenia

Thrombosis

Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with increased risk of thrombosis including deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and arterial thrombosis has been observed in patients who are with rheumatoid arthritis

Take the medicine as directed by the doctor don’t overdose on the medicine. If you have taken an overdose of this medicine immediately meet the doctor and rush to the nearby hospital.

It is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Don’t take the extra dose take the regular dose immediately.
