Septran Paediatric Tablet

Septran Paediatric Tablet contains Sulfamethoxazole (100mg) and Trimethoprim (20mg) used to treat bacterial infections such as Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Toxoplasmosis, Nocardiosis, Urinary tract infections, Intraabdominal infections enteritis, Ear infections, Traveler’s diarrhea, Granuloma inguinale, and Chancroid. Mainly this bacterial infection targets the lungs (pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract, ear, and abdomen infection. Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim is a Sulfonamide, Antibiotic that produces its action by preventing bacterial growth and helps to cure the infection. This medicine is not used for common flu and cold symptoms that occur due to viral infections. This medicine is commonly prescribed for cough and colds caused by bacterial infections.

It is used in the treatment of the following conditions as bacterial infections such as Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Toxoplasmosis, Nocardiosis, Urinary tract infections, Intraabdominal infections enteritis, Ear infections, Traveler’s diarrhea, Granuloma inguinale, and Chancroid

Bacterial infections

The bacterial diseases are cholera, bacterial meningitis, tetanus, gonorrhea, pneumonia, and syphilis. Bronchitis

Infection of the swelling and irritation of bronchial tubes (air passage tubes in the lungs) called bronchitis caused by the bacteria. This medicine is used to treat this bacterial infection.

Pneumonia

The Tablet is taken orally with food. You should not chew, cut or crush the tablet. Initially start with a low dose and slowly increase the dose once every week. • The use of this medicine can cause severe hyponatremia, acute or delayed lung injury
• The patients with a history of recent exposure to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim cause circulatory shock with fever, hypotension, and confusion
• Cough, shortness of breath, and pulmonary infiltrates are reported while you are using these medicines
• Therapy should be administered with caution in elderly people because it may increase the risk of developing bone marrow suppression
• At long-term, the use of this medicine may cause fungal or bacterial superinfection
• Therapy should be administered with caution in a patient who are having renal and hepatic impairment with folate deficiency
• The use of this medicine may cause Hemolysis in patients who are having G6PD deficiency
• When used along with leucovorin treatment failure and excess mortality were observed.

Diarrhea

This medicine kills the good helpful bacteria in your stomach or intestine and causes diarrhea. It leads to worsening the patient’s health condition. Better to take probiotics with this medicine to avoid diarrhea.

Antibiotic resistance

Finish the complete course of antibiotics even if you feel better. Otherwise, it will lead to Antibiotic resistance (the bacteria may be resistant to antibiotics). After taking of complete course not feel better.

Porphyria

It should be used with caution in patients with porphyria (group of disorders caused by excessive accumulation of porphyrin protein and it is linked to hemoglobin, which is essential for carrying oxygen supply in the blood), it leads to develops organ damage.

Hyperkalemia

Using this medicine develops increased potassium levels in the blood leads to hyperkalemia. Monitor regularly potassium levels.

Drug-Drug Interaction

BCG vaccine live

The use of this medicine is contraindicated because the use of trimethoprim decreases the effect of the BCG vaccine live by pharmacodynamic antagonism

Abametapir

Use alternative drugs because the use of abametapir will increase the effect of trimetho[rim by affecting its hepatic and intestinal enzyme metabolism.

Amiodarone

Use alternative drug because the combination of this drug increases the QTc interval

Antithrombin 111

Use alternative drugs because the use of sulfamethoxazole increases the effect of antithrombin 111 by plasma protein binding competition.

Benazepril

Therapy should be administered with caution because the combination of this drug increases the serum potassium level and it also decreases the urinary potassium excretion

Cimetidine

Therapy should be administered with caution because the use of cimetidine increases the effect of sulfamethoxazole by basic drug competition for renal tubular clearance.

Drug-Food Interaction

Use of alcohol with sulfamethoxazole produces unpleasant side effects such as fast heartbeat, redness under your skin, tingly feeling, nausea, vomiting.

Drug-Disease Interaction

Colitis

This medicine kills the good helpful bacteria in your stomach or intestine and causes diarrhea. This drug should be used caution in patients with gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis (swelling of the colon inner lining). It leads to worsening the patient’s health condition.

Hematologic toxicity

Therapy should be administered with caution in patients who are having blood dyscrasias or bone marrow suppression because the use of sulfonamides may cause hematologic toxicity including methemoglobinemia, leucopenia, granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, purpura, thrombocytopenia, and hypoprothrombinemia.

Liver diseases

Therapy should be administered with caution  in patients with hepatic impairment because the use of sulfonamides may cause hepatotoxicity including jaundice, diffuse hepatocellular necrosis, hepatitis, and hepatic failure

Urinary obstruction

Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with urinary obstruction because the use of sulfonamides `increase the risk for developing renal toxicity such as uro and nephrolithiasis, nephritis, toxic nephrosis, hematuria, proteinuria, and elevated BUN and creatinine

Crystalluria

Using this medicine develops Crystalluria (precipitation of this drug occurs in the urinary tract), which leads to cloudy urine. Drink more liquids adequately to avoid this condition.

Take the medicine as directed by the doctor don’t overdose on the medicine. If you have taken an overdose of this medicine immediately meet the doctor and rush to the nearby hospital.

Take the medicine as directed by the doctor. Do not skip the medicine, if you forgot to take the medicine or missed the dose. It is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Don’t take the extra dose take the regular dose immediately. Don’t use the two-dose at one time (Double Dose).
