    Stavir capsule contains Stavudine 40mg. Stavir (Stavudine (40mg)) capsule is an antiviral medicine used in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-1 infection. Stavir capsule is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Stavir capsule works by acting on reverse transcriptase which is required for HIV active particles multiplication process thus reduces viral load of HIV in your body. Stavir capsule is used in combination with other antiviral HIV medications.

    Mechanism of action of Stavir 40mg capsule

    Stavir capsule contains Stavudine 40mg. Stavudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor is phosphorylated into stavudine -5- triphosphate. Stavudine-5-triphosphate battle with deoxythymidine triphosphate and incorporate themselves into the DNA of HIV molecular structure. After they incorporate within the DNA of HIV molecule the further process such as transcription, reverse transcriptase enzyme is inhibited. Thus, the active HIV molecule becomes inactive and further reproduction and multiplication process is stopped.

    How to Take Stavir 40mg capsule

    Stavir (Stavudine (40mg)capsule is taken orally with or without food.

    Stavir capsule should be taken at a specific time

    Don’t chew or break the tablet.

    Swallow Stavir capsule as whole.

    After therapy has been initiated, do not take more or less of Stavir medicine than prescribed or stop taking it without your physicians’ approval.     • 30 kgs to 60 kgs – 30 mg taken twice a day orally
    • >60 kgs – 40mg taken twice a day orally


    Use of Stavir 40mg capsule in children

    Stavir (Stavudine (40mg)capsule usage is provided as follows:

    •  14 days to 30 kgs – 1mg/kg twice a day orally
    •  More than 30 kgs dosage provided is as an adult


    Use of Stavir 40mg capsule in Elderly Patients

    Stavir (Stavudine (40mg)capsule has only been used in few patients 65 years or older. Dosage and usage are similar to adults. Discuss with your physician before usage.


    Other general warnings

    Stavir (Stavudine (40mg)capsule can be safely taken with any type of food, if doubts arise kindly refer to your physician. Stavir capsule generally causes dizziness and instability thus it is advised not to be taken with alcohol.
